Basis Desk Verify — privacy policy
What the Basis Desk Verify browser extension reads, when, why, who processes it and how long it is kept. No browsing history, no ads, no data sales.
Basis Desk Verify is a browser extension published by Basis Desk (basisdesk.news). It shows source-verified context for the web page you are reading. This policy covers the extension; the website has its own privacy policy.
When the extension reads a page
Only when you ask: by clicking the extension’s toolbar icon, pressing its keyboard shortcut (Alt+Shift+V by default) or choosing “Verify with Basis Desk” on selected text. Chrome then gives the extension temporary access to that one tab (the activeTab permission). The extension does not run on pages in the background, does not read other tabs and has no access to your browsing history, cookies, passwords or form data.
What is sent to Basis Desk
- The address (URL), title, description and visible text of the page (up to about 14,000 characters), the links on it, and the text you selected, if any.
- A random installation identifier created by the extension (not linked to your identity), the extension version and your browser language — used for daily usage limits and to answer in your language.
- Your IP address reaches our servers as with any web request. We use it only in hashed, daily-rotating form for abuse limits; our hosting provider’s standard request logs are kept for a few days for security and debugging.
What it is used for
Only to provide the extension’s features: finding Basis Desk coverage and the primary documents related to the page, live prices for assets it mentions, token safety checks for contract addresses on it, and — when you press “Check the claims” or verify a selection — comparing the page’s claims with those sources. We do not use this data for advertising, profiling or any purpose unrelated to these features, and we do not sell or share it with data brokers. Basis Desk Verify’s use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Who processes it
- Cloudflare — hosts our servers and caches results.
- Google (Gemini API) — processes the page text and the evidence when you request a claim check, to produce the labels and notes.
- GoPlus Security — receives a contract address and chain when you request a token safety check.
How long it is kept
Results are cached for up to 24 hours so the same page is not processed twice; daily usage counters expire after two days. We do not keep a log of the pages you check. The installation identifier and a usage counter stay in your browser’s extension storage until you remove the extension.
Your choices
Do not click the icon on pages you do not want checked. Removing the extension deletes its local data. Questions or deletion requests: privacy@basisdesk.news.
Changes
We will update this page and its date if the extension’s data use changes. The extension is not directed at children under 13.
