Basis Desk Verify: Fact-Check Crypto News on Any Page, Free in Chrome
Our new Chrome extension shows the verified story, the primary documents, live prices and a token scam check next to any crypto article, and labels its claims against the sources.
At a glance
- What happened
- Basis Desk released Basis Desk Verify, a free Chrome extension that brings our source-verified coverage and primary documents to any crypto web page.
- Why it matters
- Readers can check a claim against the original documents in seconds instead of trusting a headline, a screenshot or a post.
- Who is affected
- Anyone who reads crypto news, posts or token pages in Chrome, Edge or Brave, in seven languages.
- What's next
- Listings in the Edge and Firefox add-on stores are next; feedback goes to support@basisdesk.news.
Key points
- Basis Desk Verify is a free Chrome extension: click its icon on any crypto article to open a side panel with our verified coverage of the same story.
- It lists the primary documents the page links to, live prices of the coins it mentions, and a one-click scam check for any token contract on the page.
- On request it compares the page's key claims with the sources and labels each one: matches, differs, not covered, or opinion.
Most crypto news reaches you as a headline, a screenshot or a post with no link to where it came from. Basis Desk Verify is our answer: a free Chrome extension that puts the sources next to the story.
Click its icon on any crypto article, blog post, exchange announcement or token page and a side panel opens. Add Basis Desk Verify to Chrome — it's free and needs no account.
What the panel shows
- Verified context. The Basis Desk story on the same event, with what happened, why it matters, its primary sources and the story thread it belongs to.
- The primary documents. Regulator releases, court filings, company and protocol posts, GitHub: the original documents the page links to, listed in one place.
- Live prices. Every asset the page mentions, plus the Crypto Fear & Greed index.
- Token safety. Contract addresses found on the page get a one-click scam check: honeypot behaviour, buy and sell tax, mint and pause powers, blacklists, proxy contracts and owner privileges (data from GoPlus Security, the same check as our token safety checker).
Claim check
Press Check the claims and the extension picks up to five key claims from the page and compares them with Basis Desk's verified coverage and the primary documents the page links to. You can also select a single sentence, right-click and choose Verify with Basis Desk.
Each claim gets one of four labels, with the evidence quoted:
- Matches verified coverage — a source states the same fact, with the same numbers, dates and actors.
- Differs from a source — a source says something different about the same fact; the panel quotes it so you can judge.
- Not in sources we track — nothing we track addresses it. That is not a verdict that the claim is false.
- Opinion or prediction — forecasts, price targets and opinions, which no source can confirm.
The extension never calls a page or its author false. It shows what the sources say.
Privacy
The extension reads a page only when you ask: a click on its icon, the Alt+Shift+V shortcut or the right-click menu. It does nothing in the background and has no access to your browsing history. The page you check is sent to Basis Desk to find coverage and sources; claim checks are processed by an AI model, and contract addresses by GoPlus Security. No ads, no tracking, no data sales. The full privacy policy lists every detail.
